02.21.17 “Ursula’s Error” wc 396

“New eyes to see the dawn.”

Ursula’s essay on ‘Belief in Belief’ was/is magical. She strengthens a point that sustains my own day to day optimism. If we write something that isn’t quite perfect, and our effort is genuine, someone else may come along and make it better. Ursula was of the opinion that faith and science have “little or no overlap: neither can support or contradict the other.” Can we prove that she was wrong, raise the bar for literacy and free the world from the causality that makes many fear black cats?

Christians believe they walk with truth even though its conjecture derived from a fib bone fib. Let’s focus on the Christian’s desire to value truth and amplify why that’s a good thing.

The fullness of time allows our understanding of truth to expand. Truth allowed us to land on the moon and return. It allows us to understand that the universe is 13.7 billion years old. Gandhi opined that “God is Truth” or “Truth is God.” If the Christians are willing to accept that view as kosher we can embrace Ursula’s statement “I see no opposition between accepting the theory of evolution and believing in God.”

The Overlap
If God is real, and values Truth, is God able to bless creation with understanding that suffers from imperfect conjecture? If your answer is no, the fullness of time is required to correct an oversight that has led millions to believe Eden’s myth should be taught as literal Truth. Imagine someone on their knees, praying for an answer that explains why they appear to have a tail bone and no tail. Is it possible that ‘God’ could use science to answer the question and free the world from the insanity derived from believing the devil is real? If God answers the heart’s desire for improved understanding, would it qualify as overlap, when God uses Wallace or Darwin’s insight to answer the believer’s prayer?

Christians claim God answers prayer. If Christians choose not to believe the answer, which is revealed only after the fullness of time has come to pass; can the Christian ignore the answer and also be a human being who helps empower equality, liberty and justice for all?

“Overlap” leads to justice that frees us from the fraud
currently leading millions to covet truth that’s flawed.
