van•guard (ˈvanˌɡärd) noun
1. a group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas.

: a position at the forefront of new developments or ideas.

synonyms: forefront, advance guard, spearhead, front, front line, fore, van, lead, cutting edge; avant-garde, leaders, founders, founding fathers, pioneers, trailblazers, trendsetters, innovators, groundbreakers
: the foremost part of an advancing army or naval force.

We can imagine a ‘vanguard’ as being a single person, with limited free will. I have two choices. The preferred option is #13, Asimov’s mule as King’s ‘lawnmower man.’  That leaves the ball in JAG’s court. For the record, I never did learn to dance, jump or dribble.
